There are two Unesco heritage list forts near Nizwa - Jabreen and Bahla. Jabreen is said to be the prettiest fort in Oman and pretty it is indeed. Bahla is one of the oldest ones in Oman and its history is not fully known. You need about an hour for both forts. In Jabreen you will get an audio guide and there are lot of info boards.
